Eligibility for Enrolling in Anesthesiologist Schools:

Needless to say, to acquire the title of an anesthesiologist, the aspiring medical students will have to move successfully through various stages, jumping from high school classes to colleges and then to universities for obtaining the respective diplomas and other training requirements. The first stage, like in any other medical careers, does involves getting the bachelor’s degree. Then, after you emerge from a 4 years long CAAHEP accredited medical school (with an MD degree in your hand), then you are eligible to finally enroll in any one of the top anesthesiologist schools for further education.

Anesthesiologist Job Responsibilities:

As a matter of fact, the job responsibilities of an anesthesiologist are of perilous nature. This is why they are paid a lot of money in the first place. Their standard job encompasses monitoring the patient’s condition before the operation term, during the period of operation and even after the operation. And, by the way, the anesthesiologists have to make swift decisions regarding the administration of the anesthetics during the medical procedure by analyzing the patient’s vital signs.

Believe it or not, the decisions made by an anesthesiologist will affect the maximum success percentage of the operation. So, let me tell you once again that an anesthesiologist career is a tough one, unlike that of the pediatrician and even that of the accounting personnel.

Therefore, it is essential that an anesthesiologist must be thoroughly qualified to lead the Anesthesia Care Unit, which generally encompasses the nurse anesthetist, anesthesiologist assistant and the anesthesia technician; and for this reason the aspiring anesthesiologists must take care to enroll in the right anesthesiologist schools that offer quality anesthesiologist training program.

Anesthesiologist schooling- Time period & Stages!

A medical doctor or any other specialist, who is qualified to administer the anesthetic to the patients during their surgery or operation, is literally known as an anesthesiologist. In the United States, anesthesiologists are given the title of physicians. These anesthesiologists monitor the vital signs of the patient and help put them under anesthesia, i.e. a condition of the body in which the person loses his/her bodily sensation along with losing their consciousness or without losing it. Anyway, to become an anesthesiologist, one needs to devote themselves in at least 16 years of anesthesiologist schooling.

Anesthesiologist schoolingYou may be wondering that- “Oh my God! 16 YEARS! That’s too much and what about the fee charges? I might have to bury myself in debts!” Yeah, we know that the time period and the money needed for anesthesiologist education is, well, too high. Nevertheless, once you become an anesthesiologist, you will be earning much more than what you spent. For your information, the salary of a qualified anesthesiologist ranges from $200000 to $400000 per year (or even more). And, this is why you need to accomplish the 16 years of anesthesiologist schooling. You see, anesthesiologist is a good career choice.

4 Stages of anesthesiologist schooling:

First Stage: Bachelor’s Degree

As with most of all the medical careers, the anesthesiologist’s path also starts from the bachelor’s degree. You will need to enroll yourself in the pre-med programs, which involves a heavy study from your part in four main courses: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Math. Your progress in these pre-med programs will be evaluated in the MCAT i.e. Medical College Admission Test. The MCAT includes the questions regarding the basic principles of science, to check whether you are qualified to attain the medical schools.

Second Stage: Medical School

If you have successfully passed the MCAT exam, then you can carry on to a recognized medical school as a further step of anesthesiologist schooling. Through the medical school, you need to achieve your M.D. (i.e. Doctor of Medicine) degree. Since the anesthesiologists need to have the information of different kinds of medicines, the medical school will expose you to the related areas of medical fields, especially the pharmacy, surgery, internal medicine and cardiology.

The 4 years of medical college will encompass 2 years of class-room training and the other 2 years will be focused on massing clinical experience.

Third Stage: Residency

After the completion of medical school, which requires you to have achieved the M.D. degree, you can then go through a residency program in the anesthesiology specialty area. It also takes generally 4 years.

In the 1st year, the course will encompass rotating through the different general medicine areas, namely the pediatrics, internal medicine, emergency medicine and so on. The other 3 years will be entirely focused on the anesthesiology. You’ll have a good time massing experience and knowledge in the hospital.

Following the completion of your residency, you can also enroll yourself in some interested fellowship programs, which lasts 1 or 2 years accordingly. These post-residency programs primarily focus on anesthesiology’s sub-specialty areas, namely the neurosurgery, pediatric, dental or transplant anesthesia. Vocational training is also valuable.

Fourth Stage: Certification

Certification from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) or the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) is the final feat to achieve in order to be an anesthesiologist. As a matter of fact, the board certification involves the completion of oral & written exams.  Besides, you should also need to get licensed by the state in which you sought to practice.

In brief, you need to get good grades in science and math subjects during high school education, and then you need to spend 4 years in any of the accredited colleges. After that, there are the medical schools and the universities. Some of the best medical schools are in Georgia and in Florida. So, you may need to live away from your home for further education, if you are indeed determined to be an anesthesiologist. As a side note, the best job outlooks regarding anesthesiology practitioners are MD anesthesiologists, nurse anesthesiologist/Certifies Registered Nursing anesthesiologist, anesthesiologist assistants and anesthesiologist technicians. The time period of anesthesiologist schooling differs according to the choice of your career.
